Toyota Launches Updated Hilux Pickup With Refined Diesel Powertrain

Date:

Toyota has launched the updated Hilux pickup in Japan, introducing a refined powertrain and expanded technology features to one of the world's most enduring nameplates in the pickup segment.

The revised Hilux is powered by Toyota's proven 2.8-litre direct-injection clean diesel engine (1GD-FTV), paired with a six-speed Super Electronically Controlled automatic transmission (6 Super ECT). Toyota says the combination delivers strong low-end torque, improved fuel efficiency, and notably better cabin quietness compared to the outgoing model.

The pickup retains its part-time four-wheel-drive system, selectable via a transfer switch on the dashboard. A Multi-Terrain Select system allows drivers to adjust traction settings for different surfaces, while a Multi-Terrain Monitor provides a surround view to help navigate obstacles off-road.

Inside, the updated Hilux features a new display audio system with an eight-inch HD touchscreen supporting connected navigation. Toyota's Helpnet emergency response system is also standard, automatically connecting to an operator when the airbags deploy to coordinate emergency assistance.

Over-the-air software updates via the vehicle's data communication module (DCM) allow Toyota to continuously improve safety and convenience features after purchase, a capability the brand has been rolling out across its global lineup.

The updated Hilux is produced at Toyota Motor Thailand's Banpo plant, which serves as a key export hub for the pickup across multiple markets. Toyota has not yet confirmed pricing or availability details for other regions outside Japan.

With the refreshed Hilux, Toyota is aiming to strengthen its position in the competitive mid-size pickup segment, where rivals including the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton continue to battle for market share across Asia-Pacific and beyond.
