Umno Upholds Federal-State Autonomy Stance as PRN 2026 Heats Up

Free Malaysia Today -- PETALING JAYA: Umno has firmly reiterated its position that the federal unity government agreement does not prevent it from contesting in state elections, following the dissolution of both Johor and Negeri Sembilan state assemblies. Party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki clarified that the Johor state government was formed before the unity government was established at the federal level and did not involve Pakatan Harapan parties in its arrangement. Therefore, the agreement on the formation of the unity government at the federal level does not bind any state government. Asyraf stated in a written statement after tonights Umno Supreme Council meeting that any form of political cooperation must be rooted in principles of sincerity and trust. He also rejected claims by certain quarters that Umnos decision to defend its mandate in Johor amounted to betrayal of the federal coalition, describing it instead as a legitimate, mature and constitutional democratic act. The Johor state assembly was dissolved on June 1, while the Negeri Sembilan assembly was dissolved on June 5, paving the way for state elections in both states. In Negeri Sembilans case, the dissolution came two months after 14 Umno assemblymen declared they had lost confidence in menteri besar Aminuddin Harun and withdrew support for his administration. Asyraf emphasized that Umno maintains its commitment to continue supporting the unity government until the next general election (GE16), but reserved the right to chart its own course in state elections. The party remains open to cooperation with any political party in the interests of political stability and the well-being of the people. The Election Commission is expected to announce polling dates for both states soon, with political machinery from all major coalitions already beginning their campaign preparations. Asyraf remarks come amid widespread speculation about potential coalition arrangements in the upcoming state polls. Analysts have noted that Umnos stance reflects a pragmatic approach to navigating the complex federal-state political dynamics in Malaysia. The party secretary-general stressed that Umnos political bureau will continue to make decisions based on what serves the best interests of the party and the people, rather than being bound by previous federal-level agreements that were negotiated and concluded at a different political juncture.
