Volkswagen Group Electrifies Europe: CUPRA Raval and VW ID. Polo Begin Production at Martorell

Date:

Martorell, Spain — June 3, 2026 — The Volkswagen Group has reached a pivotal milestone in its electrification strategy as the SEAT & CUPRA plant in Martorell officially commenced series production of two highly anticipated electric vehicles: the CUPRA Raval and the Volkswagen ID. Polo. This launch marks the arrival of the Electric Urban Car Family, a bold cross-brand initiative designed to make zero-emission mobility accessible across Europe.

Led by SEAT & CUPRA on behalf of the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core, the Electric Urban Car Family represents the first project of this scale entrusted to the Spanish subsidiary. Built on a common platform architecture, the program encompasses four fully electric models spanning three distinct brands — all manufactured in Spain. By sharing a modular platform, the Group has significantly reduced production complexity and costs while preserving the distinct character and identity of each model.

At the heart of the Martorell transformation is the MEB21 platform, the next evolution of Volkswagen’s modular electric toolkit. SEAT & CUPRA will continue to spearhead the development of this platform from the Iberian Peninsula, reinforcing Spain’s role as a strategic hub for the Group’s electric future.

The CUPRA Raval stands as the most radical expression of the urban electric vehicle yet. Measuring just four meters in length, the Raval packs a sporty silhouette, a driver-focused cockpit, and an interior that pushes boundaries with 3D-knitted CUP Bucket seats and dynamic light projections integrated into the door panels. Riding on the advanced MEB+ platform, the Raval delivers an estimated range of approximately 450 kilometers and will launch in three distinct editions. Market introduction is slated for summer 2026, positioning the Raval as a halo product for CUPRA as the brand celebrates its eighth anniversary.

CUPRA enters this new chapter with remarkable momentum. The brand has sold over one million vehicles since its inception and posted its best-ever first quarter in 2026, with March becoming the highest-selling month in its history. CUPRA is now closing in on its strategic target of capturing three percent of the European automotive market.

Alongside the Raval, the Volkswagen ID. Polo brings the iconic Polo nameplate into the electric age. The compact EV delivers 155 kW (211 PS) of power with a combined energy consumption of 14.6 to 13.3 kWh per 100 kilometers and zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions, earning it the top CO₂ efficiency Class A rating. The ID. Polo is engineered to offer a familiar yet thoroughly modern package for buyers making the transition to electric driving.

Wayne Griffiths, CEO of SEAT & CUPRA, described the production launch as a defining moment for the company and for European mobility. The Martorell facility, one of Spain’s largest automotive manufacturing sites, has undergone extensive retooling to accommodate electric vehicle production alongside its existing internal combustion and plug-in hybrid lines.

The arrival of the Electric Urban Car Family signals the Volkswagen Group’s commitment to democratizing electric mobility. By producing affordable, compact EVs in southern Europe, the Group aims to bring zero-emission driving to a broader audience — from Barcelona to Berlin — at a competitive price point.
