The Election Commission (EC) has registered over 2.7 million electors eligible to cast their ballots in the 16th Johor state election, based on the Supplementary Electoral Roll for April 2026 which was gazetted on May 21.
EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus was quoted by Bernama as saying the figure comprises 2,703,175 ordinary voters and 24,751 early voters, including police personnel, General Operations Force officers and their spouses, as well as members of the armed forces and their spouses.
Of the total electorate, 56,655 are persons with disabilities who will require special attention from the EC to ensure they can vote comfortably, Khairul Shahril told Bernama.
The figures remain subject to updates through the Supplementary Electoral Roll that will be adopted for the election following a decision at an EC special meeting scheduled for June 12. That meeting will also determine key election dates, including nomination day and polling day, for both Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
Approximately 42,000 election workers are expected to be mobilised to manage all aspects of the state election, according to Khairul Shahril. The workforce will include 56 Returning Officers, election personnel, and security officers.
"Fundamentally, the cost of conducting an election depends on several factors, including the number of registered voters, polling centres and polling streams, the appointment of election personnel, logistical requirements, and the use of information and communications technology," Khairul Shahril said.
Johor, with 56 state constituencies, is one of the most significant state-level electoral contests in Malaysia. The voter figure of over 2.7 million reflects continued electorate growth following the implementation of automatic voter registration and the lowering of the voting age to 18 under the Undi18 constitutional amendment.
Negeri Sembilan, which has 36 state seats, will hold its polls concurrently. The EC special meeting on June 12 is expected to announce the full timeline for both states. -- Sources: Bernama, Election Commission of Malaysia
