Election Commission to Set Key Dates for Johor and Negeri Sembilan State Polls on June 12

Date:

The Election Commission (EC) will convene a special meeting on June 12 to finalise critical logistical details for the upcoming Negeri Sembilan and Johor state elections, following the formal dissolution of their respective state assemblies.

EC Secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus confirmed the upcoming session, stating that the meeting will be chaired by EC Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, according to Bernama. The commission is expected to establish the official electoral timeline for both states.

The June 12 session will focus on determining the official issuance of the writ of election, the designation of nomination day, the scheduling of polling day, and the confirmation of the specific electoral roll to be utilised.

Under the state constitutions, the election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the assembly. For Negeri Sembilan, dissolved on June 5, this requires polls to be conducted on or before August 4, 2026. Johor, dissolved on June 1, faces a similar constitutional deadline.

Coordinating dual state elections presents significant administrative challenges. The EC must allocate sufficient personnel, including temporary polling clerks and security officers, to manage voting centres across diverse geographical areas. Historical precedent suggests approximately 42,000 election workers will be mobilised for Johor alone.

Political parties in both states have already begun intensifying campaign preparations, with seat allocation discussions among major coalitions actively shaping the electoral landscape. The finalised polling dates will trigger the official campaign period.
