Volkswagen Unveils First All-Electric GTI: The ID. Polo GTI

Volkswagen has presented the first all-electric model to carry the legendary GTI badge — the completely newly developed ID. Polo GTI. Making its world premiere at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, the ID. Polo GTI marks a historic moment exactly 50 years after the debut of the original Golf GTI in 1976.

The ID. Polo GTI delivers 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of torque to the front wheels, just like the original GTI, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Power is managed through an electronically controlled front differential lock fitted as standard, ensuring the torque is delivered with precision for maximum cornering dynamics.

"The GTI for a new era," as Volkswagen describes it, is a powerful and highly agile compact sports car that remains suitable for everyday driving. Pre-sales are scheduled to start in Germany this autumn at a price of just under 39,000 euros.

GTI Design DNA, Reimagined

The ID. Polo GTI follows Volkswagen's new Pure Positive design language, creating a compact sports car with a clear and powerful stance on standard 19-inch alloy wheels. The iconic red stripe — a hallmark of GTI since 1976 — stretches across the front, with a 3D GTI logo incorporated on the left side. An LED light strip, illuminated VW badge, and standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights sit above, while the air intake features the characteristic GTI honeycomb pattern.

The silhouette reveals Volkswagen's most recognizable design feature: the C-pillar inspired by the first Golf. At the rear, a unique divided roof spoiler and IQ.LIGHT tail light clusters with three-dimensional LED elements distinguish the GTI. The two-part black rear diffuser gives the car a muscular appearance.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

Standard technical equipment includes adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering specially developed for the GTI. A new GTI driving profile, activated by a button on the sports steering wheel, switches all drive and chassis systems to maximum sportiness with a single click. The cockpit also changes to a specific color and graphics scheme.

The ID. Polo GTI is powered by the APP290 drive system, supplied by a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery with a net energy content of 52 kWh. This enables a WLTP range of up to 424 km. DC charging at up to 105 kW allows the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes, thanks to a particularly constant charging curve.

Interior and Practicality

Red and black dominate the interior, with contrasting red stitching on the GTI sports steering wheel, a red marking at the 12 o'clock position, and a red stripe across the dash panel. The premium sport seats feature fabric that reinterprets the legendary tartan check of historic GTI models. A retro display mode transforms the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit into the style of a late Golf I, with the 12.9-inch infotainment display showing cassette-style graphics for music playback.

Despite its compact dimensions, the ID. Polo GTI offers impressive practicality. The luggage compartment volume has grown by more than 25 percent compared to the previous Polo GTI, from 351 to 441 liters, expanding to 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded. A detachable ball coupling allows towing of up to 1.2 tonnes.

Technology and Assistance

The MEB+ platform enables state-of-the-art assist systems, including optional Connected Travel Assist that can detect red traffic lights and automatically brake the vehicle to a standstill. One-pedal driving for rapid deceleration through accelerator control alone is also a new feature.

Optional equipment includes a Harman Kardon sound system with 425 Watts and 10 speakers, a panoramic sunroof, pneumatic massage function for the front seats, and Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires developed specifically for the ID. Polo GTI.

With the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen proves that the spirit of the original hot hatch lives on — now in an all-electric form that delivers the same driving excitement for a new generation.
