Nigerian Author Accuses Hospital of Blocking Inquiry Into Sons Death
Lagos – Award-winning novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused a Lagos hospital of obstructing a coroners investigation into the January death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu, who was receiving treatment following diagnostic procedures.
The author, known for works including Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, alleges Euracare Hospital has deliberately delayed and muddied proceedings surrounding the inquest, which was originally scheduled to begin in April. Adichie has petitioned Nigerias Federal High Court to block the hospitals attempts to halt the formal inquiry.
This is the ultimate and utter loneliness of grief that only you can know the true depth of your despair, Adichie wrote in an April letter shared on social media, her first public statements since the childs death. I long for, at least, peace to mourn, but Euracare Hospital has robbed me even of that.
Adichie has questioned the hospitals official cause of death, which listed bacterial meningitis. The author notes there was no medical evidence supporting this designation on her sons death certificate.
The writer and her family have filed negligence claims, asserting that medical staff at Euracare denied Nkanu oxygen during treatment and administered excessive sedation, resulting in cardiac arrest. Nkanu, one of twin boys born via surrogate in 2024, initially received care at Atlantis Hospital in Lagos for what was described as worsening but mild illness.
Plans were underway to transfer the toddler to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for specialized treatment when Euracare conducted a pre-flight examination including MRI and spinal tap procedures. Nkanu died on January 7 following these diagnostics.
Hospital administrators expressed condolences while maintaining their care standards aligned with international protocols. The facility acknowledged receiving Adichies letter but denied any professional misconduct.
Adichies legal submissions to the court detail what they characterize as incomplete and inaccurate medical records provided by Euracare staff. The author describes this as strikingly unprofessional documentation handling.
According to court documents, Nkanu had been admitted to Atlantis Hospital initially with what doctors classified as a mild but deteriorating condition. Medical teams there coordinated with specialists for potential overseas treatment at one of Americas premier pediatric facilities.
The planned Johns Hopkins transfer represented a critical intervention strategy for the young patients care. Euracare was tasked with completing standard pre-flight medical clearance, including imaging and diagnostic tests to ensure safe air transport.
Medical experts note that bacterial meningitis typically presents with rapid onset symptoms including fever, headache, and neck stiffness. The condition requires immediate antibiotic treatment and intensive care monitoring, particularly in pediatric cases.
Adichie has indicated that the requested autopsy and full medical review could provide answers about treatment protocols and potential alternative diagnoses. The authors legal team argues that the hospitals resistance to transparency suggests potential culpability.
