BMW M2 with M xDrive Debuts as First All-Wheel-Drive M2 with 480 HP

The Iconic Compact Sports Car Gets All-Wheel Drive for the First Time

MUNICH, Germany — BMW M GmbH has unveiled the most significant evolution of its celebrated M2 compact performance car, introducing an M xDrive all-wheel-drive system to the model for the first time in its history. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive delivers enhanced traction, faster acceleration, and year-round performance capability while maintaining the visceral driving character that has made the M2 a favourite among driving enthusiasts worldwide.

The new M2 with M xDrive is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, producing 353 kW (480 horsepower) — the same output as its rear-wheel-drive sibling. However, the addition of the M xDrive system transforms the car's performance envelope. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is now accomplished in just 3.7 seconds, a full 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear-wheel-drive model. Using the "one-foot rollout" method, the time drops to 3.4 seconds. The 80 to 120 km/h (50 to 75 mph) passing sprint is covered in 3.7 seconds.

"The new BMW M2 with M xDrive opens the next chapter in the story of an icon," said Alexander Karajlovic, Vice President for Development at BMW M GmbH. "It breaks new ground in blending the strong, uncompromising character of the BMW M2 compact high-performance sports car with the superior traction and precision of M xDrive for the first time."

Revolutionary Engine Technology

The BMW M2 with M xDrive also debuts BMW M Ignite technology — a new pre-chamber combustion process patented by BMW that represents a direct technology transfer from motorsport to production vehicles. This innovation significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads, a benefit that track-day enthusiasts will particularly appreciate, allowing them to lap for longer periods on the same amount of fuel. The pre-chamber combustion process also helps the engine meet the requirements of the upcoming EU7 emissions standard.

Combined fuel consumption is rated at 10.4 to 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres (27.2-27.4 mpg imp), with CO₂ emissions of 235-233 g/km according to the WLTP cycle.

How M xDrive Works

The M xDrive system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, ensuring fully variable and ultra-smooth distribution of power between the front and rear axles. The system retains a rear-wheel bias in normal driving, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels until additional traction is needed. An Active M Differential works in tandem, distributing drive variably between the rear wheels as required.

The system's responses can be configured via the M Setup menu, allowing drivers to tailor the all-wheel-drive characteristics to suit driving conditions and personal preferences. For purists, a 2WD mode with DSC deactivated sends torque exclusively to the rear wheels, delivering the pure driving experience the M2 is famous for.

M Compound brakes with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston callipers at the rear provide stopping power suitable for both road and track use. The car rides on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear M light-alloy wheels, with track tyres available as an option.

Production and Availability

Production of the new BMW M2 with M xDrive will begin in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico, alongside other M2 models. The market launch will commence in late summer 2026. The most important sales markets are expected to be the United States, Germany, and China.

The BMW M2 was the biggest-selling high-performance model from BMW M GmbH in 2025, and this new all-wheel-drive variant is poised to expand the model's appeal to customers in regions with challenging weather conditions while offering existing fans an even more capable performance machine.

For the first time, the BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue special paint finish is available for an M2 model, adding a distinctive visual option to an already expressive colour palette that includes five metallic and three solid variants, plus six additional options from the BMW Individual programme.
