President Donald Trump issued a message on Sunday marking the 251st anniversary of the founding of the United States Army, as the service branch marked its traditional birthday of June 14.
The message, released by the White House, commemorated the Army's establishment by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 and described the service's role in conflicts from the American Revolution through contemporary overseas deployments. The White House highlighted what it described as "historic investments" in Army infrastructure, weapons systems, and the defense industrial base.
Trump's statement referenced a "Warrior Dividend" delivered to more than 1.5 million service members last Christmas — a tax-free bonus of US,776 — and said the Army had reached its 2026 recruiting targets four months ahead of schedule. The White House also said the administration had removed "DEI ideologies" from military training and restored a "warrior ethos." These claims were not independently verified.
The US Army is the largest branch of the United States Armed Forces, with approximately 450,000 active-duty personnel and significant deployments in Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific. The Army's global footprint includes approximately 170,000 troops stationed overseas across more than 140 countries, making the service's size and funding priorities a recurring subject of international defence policy discussions.
The 251st anniversary comes as the Trump administration pursues broad changes to US defence policy, including a push for increased allied burden-sharing in NATO and expanded US military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. The White House message did not address specific overseas commitments but framed the Army's readiness as central to "preserving America's peace, prosperity, and security."
Defence analysts have noted that the Army's fiscal year 2027 budget request, which the administration has described as a major increase, would require congressional approval. The long-term impact of the proposed investments on troop levels, equipment modernisation, and forward deployments remains subject to the annual appropriations process.
