Volkswagen has officially unveiled the first all-electric model to wear the legendary GTI badge. The new ID. Polo GTI made its world premiere at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, marking 50 years since the debut of the original Golf GTI in 1976.
Producing 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, the ID. Polo GTI sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 175 km/h. True to GTI heritage, power is delivered to the front wheels, with an electronically controlled front differential lock fitted as standard to manage the instant torque delivery of the electric motor.
"The GTI for a new era," Volkswagen calls it, and the numbers back up the claim. The ID. Polo GTI is built on the MEB+ platform and features a 52 kWh (net) nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, delivering a WLTP range of up to 424 kilometers. DC fast charging at up to 105 kW can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes, thanks to a particularly constant charging curve.
Beyond the powertrain, Volkswagen has equipped the ID. Polo GTI with a comprehensive chassis package befitting the GTI name. Adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering come standard, both specially developed for this model. A new GTI driving profile, activated via a button on the sports steering wheel, instantly sharpens all drive and chassis systems — including power delivery, steering response, and suspension damping — to maximum sportiness.
Visually, the ID. Polo GTI is unmistakable. The iconic red stripe stretches across the front fascia, housing a 3D GTI logo on the left side. Below it, a honeycomb-patterned air intake and red-painted vertical elements reminiscent of motorsport towing eyes signal performance intent. Standard 19-inch alloy wheels and IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights complete the front-end treatment. At the rear, a divided roof spoiler, red-accented lighting elements, and a muscular two-part black diffuser distinguish the GTI from its standard siblings.
Inside, the cabin is dominated by red and black, with contrasting red stitching on the GTI sports steering wheel, dash panel, and premium sport seats. The seats feature a reinterpretation of the legendary tartan check pattern from historic GTI models. A 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit and a 12.9-inch infotainment display dominate the dashboard, with a novel "retro display" mode that transforms the instruments into the style of a late Golf I — complete with a cassette tape motif for music playback.
Practicality has not been sacrificed. The ID. Polo GTI offers 441 liters of luggage space, a 25 percent improvement over the combustion-engine Polo GTI, expanding to 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded. The compact electric drivetrain also liberates 19 mm more interior space for passengers. A detachable tow bar with a 1.2-tonne braked towing capacity adds further versatility.
On the technology front, the ID. Polo GTI debuts Connected Travel Assist, which can now detect red traffic lights and automatically bring the car to a stop within system limits. One-pedal driving is also available, enabling rapid deceleration through accelerator pedal control alone.
Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn, with a starting price of just under 39,000 euros. The model represents a pivotal moment for Volkswagen as it electrifies one of the most iconic nameplates in automotive history, proving that the GTI spirit thrives in the electric era.
