Volkswagen Unveils First-Ever Electric GTI: The All-New ID. Polo GTI

Volkswagen has officially entered a new era of performance motoring with the world premiere of the ID. Polo GTI — the first all-electric model to ever wear the legendary GTI badge. Unveiled at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, the ID. Polo GTI marks 50 years of GTI heritage while simultaneously launching the iconic nameplate into an electrified future.

Producing 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of instant torque, the ID. Polo GTI sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, with power delivered exclusively to the front wheels — a direct nod to the original 1976 Golf GTI. An electronically controlled front-axle differential lock comes as standard, ensuring the power is put down with maximum traction and cornering precision.

"The GTI for a new era: 50 years after the debut of the first GTI, Volkswagen is now presenting the first all-electric model with the world-famous badge," the company stated in its official announcement. "It is a powerful and highly agile compact sports car that at the same time is suitable for everyday driving."

Underpinned by Volkswagen's MEB+ platform, the ID. Polo GTI features a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack that delivers a WLTP range of up to 424 kilometers. DC fast charging at up to 105 kW enables a 10-to-80 percent charge in approximately 24 minutes, thanks to a particularly constant charging curve. The APP290 drive system handles propulsion duties, while the battery's structural integration contributes to the car's dynamic handling characteristics.

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI is unmistakably a GTI. The iconic red stripe stretches across the front fascia, incorporating a 3D GTI logo on the left side. Above it sits an LED light strip, an illuminated VW badge, and standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. The lower air intake features the characteristic GTI honeycomb pattern, while red-painted vertical elements in the outer areas evoke the towing eyes found in motorsport. The silhouette is defined by the classic C-pillar design inspired by the original Golf, and the rear features a unique divided roof spoiler and illuminated red elements between the tail light clusters.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by red and black, with contrasting red topstitching on the new GTI sports steering wheel and a red marking at the 12 o'clock position. The premium sport seats reinterpret the legendary tartan check pattern of historic GTI models. A standout feature is the retro display mode in the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit, which transforms the instruments into the style of a late Golf I — complete with a cassette tape motif for the music track display on the 12.9-inch infotainment screen.

The ID. Polo GTI also benefits from the latest generation of assist systems, including optional Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition capability and one-pedal driving functionality. The car rides on 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with optional Bridgestone Potenza Sport performance tires available for those seeking maximum dynamic capability.

Practicality has not been overlooked. The luggage compartment offers 441 liters of space — a 25 percent increase over the previous Polo GTI — expanding to 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded. The car also offers a towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes, making it a genuine all-rounder.

Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn, with a starting price of just under 39,000 euros. The model represents a landmark moment for Volkswagen, proving that the spirit of the GTI can thrive in the electric age while honoring five decades of driving pleasure and motorsport passion.
