Volkswagen has cemented the Golf GTI legend once again: the new Golf GTI EDITION 50, celebrating half a century of the iconic hot hatch, has become the fastest front-wheel drive production vehicle ever to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The anniversary model, which commemorates 50 years since the debut of the original GTI in 1976, lapped the legendary 20.832-kilometre circuit in just 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds. Behind the wheel was Benjamin Leuchter, a professional racing driver and Volkswagen test and development driver who knows the infamous “Green Hell” intimately.
With an output of 239 kW (325 PS), the Golf GTI EDITION 50 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 270 km/h. It is not only the most powerful production Golf GTI ever built but also the most dynamically precise, underscoring its exceptional position within the Volkswagen model range. The record lap also makes the EDITION 50 faster than any previous Volkswagen production model on the Nordschleife.
“The Nordschleife is unique with its bends, very different sections, bumps and even jumps,” said Leuchter after the record run. “And the same is true for this GTI: with impressive power, a very neutral set-up and at the same time the ability to take any bumps in its stride. The EDITION 50 is therefore more than just an anniversary model: it shows what performance in the compact segment can feel like when technical expertise, passion and 50 years of GTI history come together.”
The record-setting car was equipped with the optional Performance package, which includes enhanced chassis components. A MacPherson front axle and a four-link rear axle form the basis of the suspension layout, and the anniversary model sits 15 millimetres lower than a standard Golf. The combination delivers the precise handling and composed ride that made the GTI name famous.
The Golf GTI EDITION 50 takes the classic GTI virtues—sharp handling, everyday usability, and emotional appeal—and infuses them with the latest chassis and drive technology. The result is a compact performance car that honours 50 years of heritage while setting new benchmarks for what a front-wheel drive production car can achieve on the world’s most demanding racetrack.
Volkswagen has not yet announced full pricing or availability details for the EDITION 50, but the model is expected to arrive as a limited-run anniversary special, paying tribute to three letters that have defined hot hatch performance for five decades.
The record at the Nürburgring adds another chapter to GTI history, proving that even after 50 years, the formula of a lightweight, front-wheel drive, high-performance compact car still has the power to thrill.
