Volkswagen has etched a new chapter in automotive history as the Golf GTI EDITION 50, the 50th-anniversary special edition of the iconic hot hatch, set a blistering lap time of 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, making it the fastest front-wheel drive production vehicle ever to tackle the legendary German circuit.
The record-breaking run was accomplished by racing driver and Volkswagen test and development driver Benjamin Leuchter, who piloted the 239 kW (325 PS) anniversary model across the 20.832-kilometre lap in exemplary fashion. The time not only secures the EDITION 50 the crown among front-wheel drive production cars but also makes it the fastest Volkswagen production model of any type ever recorded on the Nordschleife.
"The Nordschleife is unique with its bends, very different sections, bumps and even jumps," said Leuchter. "And the same is true for this GTI: with impressive power, a very neutral set-up and at the same time the ability to take any bumps in its stride. The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is therefore more than just an anniversary model: it shows what performance in the compact segment can feel like when technical expertise, passion and 50 years of GTI history come together."
Unveiled as part of Volkswagen's year-long celebration of five decades of GTI heritage, the EDITION 50 is the most powerful production Golf GTI ever produced. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 270 km/h. The power is channeled through the front wheels, remaining faithful to the GTI formula established by the original 1976 model.
The record-setting car was equipped with the optional GTI Performance package EDITION 50, which includes a specially tuned chassis lowered by an additional five millimetres, a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with titanium rear silencers, and 19-inch forged alloy wheels shod with Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres in size 235/35 R19. The standard chassis already sits 15 mm lower than a standard Golf and features DCC adaptive chassis control.
Underpinning the record run is a sophisticated suspension layout with MacPherson struts at the front and a four-link rear axle, tuned to deliver the precise handling and neutral balance that have defined the GTI nameplate for five generations.
More than 2.5 million GTI models have been produced worldwide since the original Golf GTI debuted in 1976. The Golf GTI EDITION 50 represents the pinnacle of that legacy, combining the classic GTI virtues — powerful drive, precise chassis tuning, systematic front-wheel drive, understated athletic design, and everyday usability — with the latest chassis and drivetrain technology.
"With its new record time, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 underscores its exceptional position in the Volkswagen model range," the company stated. The model serves as both a celebration of half a century of GTI heritage and a statement of intent for the future of Volkswagen's performance compact segment.
The record adds to a momentous year for the GTI brand, which also saw the world premiere of the all-electric ID. Polo GTI at the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring in May, marking the first time the iconic three-letter badge has adorned a fully electric Volkswagen model.
