The United States men's national team delivered a spirited performance but fell 2-1 to Germany in their final friendly before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering both encouragement and concern for host nation fans ahead of the tournament opener on June 12.
The match, played before a packed crowd at Soldier Field in Chicago on June 6, saw Arsenal forward Kai Havertz open the scoring for Germany in just the second minute, heading in a delivery from Bayern Munich midfielder Josh Kimmich on a set piece that exposed defensive gaps in the American back line.
However, the USMNT grew into the contest and produced an equaliser of genuine tournament quality. Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson struck a magnificent long-range volley in the 38th minute, driving the ball past the German goalkeeper from outside the penalty area to level the score at one apiece heading into half-time.
The United States, coached by former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino, dominated large stretches of the first half with their pressing structure disrupting Germany's build-up play. Midfielder Tyler Adams was outstanding throughout, logging 11 defensive contributions including nine tackles and winning 10 of his 14 ground duels, establishing himself as the standout performer in an American jersey.
AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic, already the USMNT's most recognisable figure, showed his class with several incisive forward runs and creative passing, while Monaco striker Folarin Balogun worked tirelessly against the German defence. Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie provided energy and pressing throughout the midsection, though the overall team structure occasionally looked disjointed in transition.
Germany regained the lead in the second half through Leroy Sane, whose slightly deflected effort from outside the penalty area found the net past goalkeeper Matt Freese. Despite late pressure and a fierce effort from substitute Brenden Aaronson that required a world-class save, the United States could not find another equaliser.
The result extends a frustrating statistic: the USMNT has not beaten a European opponent since December 2021. Pochettino's tactical approach drew praise for putting the team in competitive positions, but defensive lapses at critical moments remain a concern as the tournament approaches.
Former USMNT captain Landon Donovan, speaking to Reuters while promoting a partnership with Nestle, said the home World Cup represents a transformative moment for American football.
"One big moment in a big game literally creates millions of new fans," Donovan said. "In this country, we are not just players, we are ambassadors and we are trying to grow the sport."
Donovan named Pulisic and McKennie as players who could emerge as breakout stars during the tournament, adding that a strong opening performance would be crucial for building momentum.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, features an expanded 48-team format with 12 groups of four and 104 total matches. The USMNT opens Group D play against Paraguay on June 12 in Inglewood, California.
"This is going to be the biggest sporting event in the history of the planet," Donovan said. "It is truly once in a lifetime."
