BMW M GmbH has announced that the iconic BMW M2 compact high-performance sports car will be available with M xDrive all-wheel drive for the first time, marking a significant evolution for the brand’s most popular high-performance model. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive delivers enhanced traction, faster acceleration, and improved directional stability without compromising the driving character that has made the M2 a global favorite.
All-Wheel Drive for the First Time
The M xDrive system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure fully variable and super-smooth distribution of the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels. True to the M philosophy, the system retains a rear-wheel bias, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions and engaging the front wheels only when additional traction is needed.
M xDrive works in concert with the Active M Differential and M-specific traction control to adapt the car’s responses precisely to the driving situation. The transfer case features a model-specific control unit with integrated wheel slip limitation, allowing it to compensate for rotational speed differences between axles without involving the central DSC management system. This results in extremely quick responses and an intensified sense of M-typical poise in highly dynamic driving situations.
Configurable Driving Dynamics
Drivers can configure the M xDrive system’s responses via the M Setup menu, adapting the all-wheel drive characteristics to both the driving situation and personal preferences. A dedicated 2WD mode with DSC deactivated sends torque exclusively to the rear wheels, unlocking a pure rear-wheel drive experience when desired.
The combination of M xDrive and the Active M Differential delivers significantly improved sprinting capability. The BMW M2 with M xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds — 0.3 seconds faster than the rear-wheel drive model. Using the “one-foot rollout” method, the figure drops to 3.4 seconds. The sprint from 80 to 120 km/h (50 to 75 mph) is covered in just 3.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), rising to 285 km/h (177 mph) with the optional M Driver’s Package.
Performance and Chassis Upgrades
The BMW M2 with M xDrive is fitted as standard with an M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, ensuring the engine’s power is harnessed to maximum dynamic effect. Standard-fit M light-alloy wheels (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) transfer power to the road, with track tires available as an option. M Compound brakes with six-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear provide optimum stopping power on both road and track.
Specially developed chassis tuning complements the all-wheel drive system, ensuring the car showcases its optimized traction with sublime assurance in fluctuating grip conditions such as ice, snow, and on the racetrack.
Production and Availability
The BMW M2 Coupé was the best-selling high-performance model from BMW M GmbH in 2025. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive will be built at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico alongside other M2 models, with production beginning in August 2026. Market launch will follow in late summer 2026. The most important sales markets for the new model are the United States, Germany, and China.
For the first time, the BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue special paint finish is available for an M2 model, accentuating the visually expressive exterior design to particularly striking effect.
“The new BMW M2 with M xDrive opens the next chapter in the story of an icon,” said a BMW M GmbH spokesperson. “It breaks new ground in blending the strong, uncompromising character of the BMW M2 compact high-performance sports car with the superior traction and precision of M xDrive for the first time.”
