BMW Unveils All-Electric i3 as Second Neue Klasse Model with 900km Range

Date:

BMW has officially revealed its second Neue Klasse model, the all-electric BMW i3, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s electrification strategy. The new i3 builds upon the iconic 3 Series legacy while embracing a fully electric future with revolutionary technology and sustainable materials.

The new BMW i3 represents a complete reimagining of the classic 3 Series formula. Featuring a bold 2.5-box design with a long wheelbase and short overhangs, the electric sedan maintains BMW’s signature sporty proportions. The shark-nose front end flows seamlessly into the sculptured bonnet, where the redesigned BMW emblem sits prominently. Strongly horizontal rear lights emphasize technical precision, while flared wheel arches highlight the vehicle’s confident stance.

Inside, BMW has created a digital-first cabin centered around the new Panoramic iDrive system. This innovative setup projects information onto a specially coated area of the windscreen stretching from A-pillar to A-pillar. The wraparound effect created by the instrument panel flowing into door panels enhances the sense of space. A 17.9-inch Free-Cut Design Central Display serves as the primary interface, complemented by a multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls and an optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhanced with Amazon Alexa+ AI technology, provides intuitive voice-based vehicle control.

Powering the i3 is BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology featuring 800-volt architecture and a fundamentally new high-voltage battery concept. The system delivers an impressive WLTP range of up to 900 kilometres on a single charge. When connected to a DC fast charger supporting up to 400 kW, the battery can replenish energy for up to 400 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes. Bidirectional charging capability transforms the i3 into a mobile power bank or home energy storage device.

The i3 introduces the Heart of Joy – BMW’s high-performance control unit that manages drive, braking, steering, and energy recuperation. This system operates ten times faster than previous iterations, enabling exceptionally precise handling. The Soft-Stop function provides the smoothest braking experience in BMW’s history. Advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems work symbiotically with human inputs, allowing seamless interaction between automation and driver control.

BMW has implemented a comprehensive sustainability approach with the i3, incorporating approximately 30 percent secondary materials across the vehicle. The front bumper trim uses 30 percent recycled plastic, while Econeer seat covers in the Essential equipment line are made from 100 percent recycled PET fabric. Innovative use of recycled maritime plastic from fishing nets appears in the engine compartment cover and storage compartment under the bonnet.

Production of the BMW i3 begins in August 2026 at BMW Group’s historic Munich plant, which has been producing premium vehicles for over a hundred years. The plant has undergone significant upgrades to accommodate the Neue Klasse production process. Customer deliveries will commence in autumn 2026, with the i3 positioned as BMW’s flagship electric sedan.
