Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has reaffirmed China’s commitment to expanding high-standard opening up and sharing development opportunities with the international community, delivering a video address to the World Convergence Summit for Growth at the invitation of the French government.
Speaking on June 11, Zhang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, told world leaders that China will continue to deliver certainty and stability to the global economy amid an evolving international landscape.
Zhang highlighted the four global initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that they provide guidance and impetus for promoting world peace and development. He urged all nations to prioritize development, improve global governance, and promote inclusive growth of the world economy.
The Chinese vice premier called on countries to uphold openness and cooperation, take an objective view of the comparative advantages of different nations, foster a free and facilitative trading environment, and practice true multilateralism.
His remarks come at a time of heightened global economic uncertainty, with major economies navigating inflation, supply chain realignments, and geopolitical tensions. China’s message of openness and cooperation signals its intent to remain a stabilizing force in global trade and investment.
The World Convergence Summit for Growth was hosted by France and chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron. The high-level gathering brought together a broad range of global leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and high-level representatives from the United States, Brazil, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, along with leaders of a European Union institution and the International Monetary Fund.
The participation of such a diverse group underscores the summit’s importance as a platform for dialogue on the future of global economic governance. Zhang’s address positioned China as a constructive partner committed to multilateral solutions and shared prosperity.
China has consistently emphasized the importance of openness and international cooperation under the current administration. The country has expanded market access for foreign investors, deepened participation in multilateral trade frameworks, and pushed forward initiatives under the Belt and Road framework to enhance global connectivity.
Zhang’s speech at the summit reaffirms Beijing’s broader diplomatic approach: advocating for inclusive globalization while defending its own development interests. As major economies seek common ground on trade, climate, and technology policy, China’s role in the World Convergence Summit reflects its ongoing engagement with Western and developing nations alike.
The summit provided a key moment for world leaders to align on shared economic goals, with Zhang’s participation highlighting China’s willingness to engage constructively on global challenges.
