Golf GTI EDITION 50 Sets Nürburgring Lap Record as Fastest Front-Wheel-Drive Production Car

Anniversary Edition Sets 7:44.523 Lap Time on Legendary German Circuit

WOLFSBURG/NÜRBURG, Germany — Volkswagen's Golf GTI EDITION 50 has set a new benchmark in the compact segment, becoming the fastest front-wheel-drive production vehicle ever to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The anniversary model, driven by Volkswagen test and development driver Benjamin Leuchter, completed the 20.832-kilometre lap in just 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds.

The record-breaking time surpasses all previous Volkswagen production models on the legendary German circuit and underscores the exceptional capabilities of the special edition built to celebrate five decades of the GTI nameplate.

"The Nordschleife is unique with its bends, very different sections, bumps and even jumps," said Leuchter. "And the same is true for this GTI: with impressive power, a very neutral set-up and at the same time the ability to take any bumps in its stride. The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is therefore more than just an anniversary model: it shows what performance in the compact segment can feel like when technical expertise, passion and 50 years of GTI history come together."

325 Horsepower of Front-Wheel-Drive Mastery

Powering the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is a 239 kW (325 PS) engine that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, on to a top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph). The anniversary model sits 15 mm lower than a standard Golf and comes equipped as standard with DCC adaptive chassis control, featuring a MacPherson front axle and a four-link rear axle layout.

The record-setting lap was completed using the optional GTI Performance package EDITION 50, which includes a specially tuned chassis lowered by an additional five millimetres, a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with titanium rear silencers, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, and Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres in size 235/35 R19.

With this performance package, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 represents the most powerful production Golf GTI ever built, combining motorsport-derived technology with the everyday usability that has defined the GTI philosophy for five decades.

A Celebration of 50 Years of GTI Heritage

The Golf GTI EDITION 50 was launched earlier this year as part of Volkswagen's celebrations marking half a century since the original Golf GTI debuted in 1976. The anniversary model features exclusive design elements inside and out that pay homage to the original while incorporating modern technology and performance.

The record lap at the Nürburgring Nordschleife — widely regarded as the world's most demanding production car test track — validates Volkswagen's commitment to front-wheel-drive performance engineering. The 7:44.523-minute lap time places the Golf GTI EDITION 50 among the fastest front-wheel-drive production cars ever tested on the circuit.

"The Golf GTI EDITION 50 is the most dynamically precise production Golf GTI," Volkswagen states. The anniversary model demonstrates that even as the automotive industry transitions toward electrification, the internal combustion GTI continues to push performance boundaries in its 50th anniversary year.

The record comes as Volkswagen simultaneously launches the ID. Polo GTI — the first all-electric GTI model — marking a dual-pronged approach to performance that honours the brand's heritage while embracing its electric future. The Golf GTI EDITION 50 proves that the original hot hatch formula, when refined over five decades, can still deliver benchmark-setting performance.
