HKETO Washington DC promotes Hong Kong as Super Connector of Asia and the World

Date:

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Washington DC hosted a significant briefing on June 11 highlighting Hong Kong pivotal role as a super connector between Asia and the global community. The event was specifically designed for college students and recent graduates who are currently interning or working at various organizations in the Washington DC area.

Ms. Elania Luk, Director of HKETO in Washington DC, delivered a comprehensive presentation on Hong Kong remarkable development trajectory and its strategic importance as an international gateway. She stated that youths today are the leaders of tomorrow and the briefing aims to help participants gain a deeper understanding about Hong Kong unique position and value proposition, which will hopefully come in handy in their future career development.

Reflecting on Hong Kong historical journey, Ms. Luk noted that dating back to the humble beginnings as a fishing village in the 1800s, the city has never been stranger to international trade. Throughout the decades, Hong Kong has consistently played a crucial role in connecting Asia with the rest of the world. With unique advantages such as a free economy, unparalleled access to the Chinese Mainland market, extensive connectivity with Asia and the world, free flow of capital and information, a simple tax regime, and a robust common law system, Hong Kong has long welcomed the international community to leverage the city as a platform for trade and business development.

The Director further highlighted Hong Kong prominent standing as an international center across multiple sectors including finance, trade, maritime transportation, aviation, dispute resolution, regional intellectual property trading, East-meets-West international cultural exchanges, and innovation and technology. She also shared insights about Hong Kong vibrant cultural scene, including its acclaimed movies, Cantopop music, and renowned food culture that continues to attract visitors from around the globe.

We welcome friends from all over the world to experience Hong Kong dynamic atmosphere firsthand, Ms. Luk emphasized. She strongly encouraged attendees to consider Hong Kong as an ideal destination to accelerate both their continued education and professional trajectories. The Director underscored that Hong Kong is home to five of the world top 100 universities, and the Hong Kong Government has introduced numerous initiatives to attract and support quality overseas talent seeking opportunities in the city.

Following Ms. Luk remarks, Mr. Dominic Chiu, Senior Analyst at The Eurasia Group, provided expert analysis on United States-China relations and their implications for business environments across Asia, including in Hong Kong. His presentation offered valuable perspectives on the complex geopolitical dynamics affecting regional commerce and investment.

The event concluded with an exhibition of curated paintings under the theme of Blossoming Hong Kong. These artistic works were commissioned by the Social Welfare Department under the Arts Development Fund for Persons with Disabilities, in collaboration with various non-governmental organizations. The commissioning of these paintings beautifully illustrates Hong Kong concerted efforts to unleash the creative potential of persons with disabilities in artistic activities while spotlighting their meaningful contributions to society.

HKETO Washington DC continues to strengthen Hong Kong international presence by facilitating meaningful dialogue and fostering connections between young professionals and the city development opportunities. This initiative exemplifies Hong Kong commitment to engaging with the next generation of global leaders and demonstrating the city unique value proposition on the international stage.
