The New York Knicks are NBA champions for the first time in 53 years, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 4–1 in the 2026 NBA Finals to claim their third franchise title.
The series, which began on June 3 and concluded on June 13, was a rematch of the 1999 NBA Finals — which the Spurs had won in five games. This time, the result was reversed.
New York opened the series with victories in Games 1 and 2, marking the first time in franchise history that the Knicks took a 2–0 lead in the NBA Finals. San Antonio responded by winning Game 3 after the Knicks missed a final three-point attempt.
Game 4 produced the series' most dramatic moment. The Spurs held a 29-point lead entering the third quarter, but the Knicks mounted a late comeback in the fourth. OG Anunoby scored the game-winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining, giving New York a one-point victory.
The Spurs were led by second-year star Victor Wembanyama, the first unanimous and youngest-ever Rookie of the Year, who earned First Team All-NBA and All-NBA Defensive honours and finished third in MVP voting. Veteran point guard De'Aaron Fox joined San Antonio in a mid-season trade from Sacramento. The Spurs entered the Finals with the Western Conference's best regular-season record.
The Knicks were led by All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson, All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns in his second season with the franchise, and forward OG Anunoby. Head coach Tom Thibodeau, who had been an assistant on the 1999 Finals team, guided New York to the title.
This was also a rematch of the 2025 NBA Cup championship game, which the Knicks had won 124–113. It marks the first time that the two NBA Cup finalists went on to meet again in that year's NBA Finals. The 2026 title also extended the NBA's streak to eight consecutive years with a unique champion — the longest such stretch in league history.
