Peugeot Revives the GTi Legend: Electric e-208 GTi Hits 278bhp in Production Form

Date:

Peugeot has officially unveiled the production version of the e-208 GTi, marking the return of its iconic GTi badge with the brand's most powerful hot hatch to date - and its first all-electric one.

The electric hot hatch will make its public debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this week, exactly one year after the concept version was shown at the same event. Peugeot says the production car's design is "incredibly close" to the original show car.

At the heart of the e-208 GTi is a single front-mounted electric motor producing 278bhp and 254lb ft of torque, delivering a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds - slightly quicker than its direct rival, the Alpine A290. This represents a substantial 124bhp increase over the standard e-208.

Under the skin, the GTi shares its technical foundation with the Abarth 600e, Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica Veloce and the upcoming Vauxhall Corsa GSE. Notably, it receives a mechanical limited-slip differential to enhance agility through corners.

The chassis has been worked over extensively. The GTi gains bespoke hydraulic bump stops, a rear anti-roll bar and a unique steering tune for improved responsiveness. It rides 30mm lower than the standard car with significantly widened tracks - 27mm wider at the rear and 56mm at the front - for improved poise and a more aggressive stance.

Visually, the production car carries over the concept's dramatic makeover, including a prominent rear spoiler and diffuser, a beefier front lip spoiler and striking 18-inch alloy wheels. The wheel design draws inspiration from the distinctive "pepperpot" pattern of the legendary 205 GTi, creating a direct visual link to Peugeot's hot hatch heritage.

Further details will be revealed on Friday 12 June as Peugeot marks the 100th anniversary of its first Le Mans race. The brand will take to the circuit in three GTis painted in red, white and blue to celebrate its French heritage.

UK sales are expected to begin towards the end of this year. With the standard e-208 priced at around GBP 28,000, the GTi variant is expected to reach the mid-GBP 30,000 range, positioning it directly against the Alpine A290 in the emerging electric hot hatch segment.

The e-208 GTi represents the first new Peugeot GTi model since the hot 308 was retired in 2021, and signals the French brand's commitment to bringing performance credentials to its electric lineup.
