Russian Strikes Kill 11 Across Ukraine, Set Historic Kyiv Cathedral Ablaze

Date:

Russian missile and drone attacks across Ukraine killed 11 people and set fire to a historic cathedral in Kyiv, according to officials on Monday.

The BBC reported that four people died in Kyiv while five rescue workers perished attempting to extinguish fires in Kharkiv following the overnight barrage. The 11th-century Dormition Cathedral suffered significant structural damage, with flames visible from the partially destroyed roof.

The attacks disrupted power service to more than 140,000 customers in the capital, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported. Ukrainian authorities said Russian forces launched 70 missiles and 611 drones in a coordinated strike targeting multiple residential buildings.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the assault on the UNESCO World Heritage site. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas classified the attacks as potential war crimes.

Moscow claimed a US-manufactured Patriot missile malfunctioned and struck the cathedral, providing no evidence to support its assertion, according to the BBC. Russian defence officials maintained the offensive targeted legitimate military infrastructure.

Russian authorities separately reported that a Ukrainian drone strike on the city of Tula killed three people and wounded three others, including a one-year-old child, according to the BBC.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the assault as one of the biggest Russian crimes against Christian culture, the BBC reported. He addressed the G7 agenda during a call with President Trump, requesting additional air defence capabilities including anti-ballistic missile systems.
