PAS Election Director-General Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has expressed his hope that the four Perikatan Nasional-controlled states will hold their state elections simultaneously with the 16th General Election (GE16), describing it as a strategic move to strengthen political momentum and save on organisational costs.
Speaking at the launch of PAS election machinery at the PAS Complex on Friday, Sanusi revealed that he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"My hope is that the PRN and GE16 are held simultaneously, so there is no need to do much work; it will take time, a lot of costs can be saved, and it will make things easier for the Election Commission (EC)," Sanusi said.
"I often chat with PMX… I asked when, he said it can be discussed," he added.
The four states under Perikatan Nasional administration — Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis, collectively known as SG4 — have yet to dissolve their legislative assemblies but are expected to align their election timeline with the national polls. Sanusi said PAS machinery is always in a state of readiness should GE16 be announced at any time.
Sanusi also confirmed that PAS will assist in the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, as well as Melaka when its assembly is dissolved. "So far, we will help PRN Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka… Melaka has not yet been dissolved, but its maturity period is December 2026," he said.
The EC has set July 11 as polling day for Johor and August 1 for Negeri Sembilan. Meanwhile, the Perikatan Nasional coalition is currently navigating internal dynamics after PAS ended its political cooperation with Bersatu earlier this month, with PAS now forming a new political alignment for the Johor polls rather than contesting solo.
The simultaneous election proposal comes as Malaysia prepares for a series of state polls across multiple states, with political observers closely watching how the fragmented opposition landscape will impact electoral outcomes.
