Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai delivered the 2026 commencement address at Stanford University on Sunday, reflecting on the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and offering graduating students his perspective on navigating a world being transformed by technology.
Speaking to Stanford's graduating class of 2026, Pichai drew on his own journey — from growing up in Chennai, India, to leading one of the world's most influential technology companies — to encourage graduates to embrace change while holding onto their core values.
"Technology is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, and AI is at the center of it all," Pichai told the graduates, according to a transcript published on Google's official blog, The Keyword. "You are graduating into a world that looks very different from the one you entered four years ago."
The Google CEO emphasized that the current AI revolution represents a shift as significant as the advent of the internet or the smartphone, and urged graduates to approach this new era with both optimism and responsibility.
"The decisions you make in your careers — the products you build, the policies you shape, the companies you lead — will determine not just what AI can do, but what it should do," Pichai said. "That is a profound responsibility, but also an extraordinary opportunity."
Pichai highlighted Google's work in developing AI responsibly, pointing to the company's AI Principles as a guiding framework. He noted that while AI presents incredible opportunities in fields like healthcare, education, and scientific research, it also demands careful consideration of ethics, privacy, and societal impact.
"Technology should be a force for good, but it doesn't become that on its own," Pichai said. "It requires intentionality. It requires people like you who are willing to ask hard questions and ensure that the tools we create benefit everyone."
The Stanford speech marks another milestone in Pichai's role as a leading voice on AI and its implications for society. As CEO of both Google and its parent company Alphabet, Pichai has overseen a period of intense AI innovation, including the development of Gemini, Google's most advanced AI model family, and the integration of AI capabilities across Search, Cloud, Workspace, and Android.
Pichai's address also touched on the importance of resilience, collaboration, and maintaining a long-term perspective in a world that often prioritizes short-term results. He encouraged graduates to stay curious, keep learning, and surround themselves with people who challenge them to be better.
"Your degree from Stanford is an incredible achievement, but it is not the end of your education," Pichai said. "The most important lessons are still ahead of you. Stay humble. Stay hungry. And never stop asking, 'What's next?'"
Stanford University is located in the heart of Silicon Valley and has long been a pipeline for talent into the tech industry. Pichai's visit underscored the deepening relationship between academia and the technology sector as AI continues to reshape industries and society at large.
Pichai is an alumnus of Stanford — he earned his master's degree in materials science and engineering from the university in 1998, as well as an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Google in 2004 and rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2015.
