Thai Royal Family Mourns Princess Bajrakitiyabha After Prolonged Health Battle

Date:

The Thai royal family mourns the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Vajiralongkorn, who died Friday after more than three years in a coma. The 47-year-old princess had been hospitalized since collapsing while exercising her dogs in December 2022, with doctors citing a severe cardiac infection as the cause of her condition.

The Bureau of the Royal Household announced her death at 19:48 local time, following what officials described as progressively declining health despite intensive medical intervention. Her passing marks the loss of the royal familys most publicly engaged member, known for advocacy work in criminal justice reform.

Princess Bajrakitiyabha dedicated much of her career to legal reform, earning graduate degrees from Cornell University before serving in Thailands Attorney-Generals offices. From 2012 to 2014, she represented Thailand as ambassador to Austria, where she developed relationships with international organizations focusing on drug policy and human rights.

Her work brought attention to Thailands disproportionately high incarceration rates for women convicted of minor drug offenses. The princess championed alternative sentencing programs that emphasized rehabilitation over punishment. From her position at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, she advocated for structural changes to the criminal justice system.

She was also a fitness enthusiast who often participated in long-distance running events. Princess Bajrakitiyabhas abilities and the trust her father appeared to place in her made her an inevitable topic of speculation about the royal succession.

King Vajiralongkorn, who is 73 years old, has not yet named an heir. Thai custom dictates that the heir should be male, but a 1974 amendment to the constitution allows a female to take the throne. The king has five sons, but four by his second marriage were disowned in 1996 and have lived in the United States since then.

His fifth son, Prince Dipangkorn, by his third wife, is the presumed heir, although questions have been raised about his ability to perform the role of monarch in a country where the royal institution carries enormous influence.

For many Thai royalists, Princess Bajrakitiyabha seemed the most promising figure to succeed her father, either as queen or as regent to assist Prince Dipangkorn. Her death leaves the question of succession in Thailand unanswered, and the severity of the countrys lese majeste law rules out any public discussion of it.

She was the most visibly accomplished member of the royal family. Her commitment to humanitarian causes distinguished her from other royals who maintain lower public profiles.

Thailands royal household has announced a period of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast across government buildings. Memorial services are being organized in accordance with tradition, though specific details have not yet been released.

As the nation reflects on Princess Bajrakitiyabhas contributions to penal reform and international diplomacy, attention turns to whether her advocacy work will continue through other members of the royal family or through the institutions she helped influence.
