U.S. Catholic Bishops Consecrate America Historic 250th Anniversary

Date:

Today marks a profoundly significant moment in American history as Catholic Bishops from across the United States gather in Orlando, Florida, for a historic consecration of the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This solemn ceremony coincides with the 250th anniversary of American Independence-a milestone that beautifully intertwines faith, patriotism, and the enduring spiritual foundation upon which this great republic was built.

The United States of America has always been a nation guided by faith. Even before formal nationhood, American colonies were settled by courageous Christians seeking religious freedom. From the heroic bands of missionary pioneers who expanded into uncharted territories to spread the Gospel, to the priests and chaplains who served during every war and crisis throughout American history, the presence of Catholic faith has remained central to the national identity.

Just years after the Revolutionary War achieved independence from British rule, Bishop John Carroll-the first Catholic bishop in the United States and cousin of Charles Carroll, the Catholic Founding Father-consecrated the young republic to Mary, the Mother of God. This early act of faith established a precedent that continues today as the bishops consecrate America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus during this historic bicentennial anniversary celebration.

The Catholic Bishops Conference is honoring the abundant gifts that God has given this nation, founded explicitly on the self-evident truths that the Creator has endowed all people with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. During the consecration ceremony, the bishops will prayerfully reflect on these foundational American principles and recommit to the nation spiritual heritage that has guided America for over two and a half centuries.

Following the consecration, on June 12, Christians throughout the United States and worldwide will celebrate the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This joyous observance commemorates God boundless love for all His creation and strengthens the spiritual ties between faith communities across the globe. The feast day represents a deep devotion to the divine heart of Christ and serves as a powerful reminder of the spiritual foundation that has sustained American society.

This year commemoration carries special historical resonance, marking approximately 40 years since President Ronald Reagan delivered his legendary address at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany. In that powerful speech, Reagan challenged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, famously declaring the most fundamental distinction between East and West was that totalitarian systems produce spiritual backwardness because they violate the human spirit.

Reagan recounted the East German television tower constructed in the 1960s, where authorities repeatedly attempted to paint the upper sphere to prevent sunlight from creating a cross-shaped reflection. Yet despite their efforts, whenever sunlight struck the sphere, the sign of the cross remained visible-a profound symbol of faith that could not be suppressed by human hands.

The same year Reagan spoke in Berlin, Pope Saint John Paul II addressed Polish youth on the Westerplatte peninsula, where 200 Polish defenders had held out against 4,000 German troops during World War II opening days. The Polish pontiff challenged young people to defend their own Westerplatte-sets of tasks, just causes, and truths that must be upheld within themselves and around themselves against forces of moral relativism.

Nearly four decades after the collapse of Soviet communism, America faces new ideological challenges. As Catholic Bishops consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart during this 250th year of independence, the nation rededicates itself to defending its spiritual identity. The bishops emphasize that faith has always been integral to American success and liberty, from early missionary work through present-day charitable ministries serving the poor and marginalized.

The President emphasized that America will continue for the next 250 years and beyond to remain a land of faith, a country of miracles, and a light and glory to all nations of the world. Today marks a recommitment to these enduring American values and spiritual heritage.
