The Hong Kong Fire Services Department launched a firefighting operation at the New Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter on Sunday after a vessel caught fire in the early hours of the morning, according to a government announcement.
The Fire Services Department said it received reports at approximately 4:18am on June 14 that a fire had broken out on a vessel in waters within the typhoon shelter. Emergency crews were dispatched and a firefighting operation is currently under way, the department stated.
Residents and businesses in the surrounding areas who are being affected by smoke and an unusual odour carried by the wind have been advised to close their doors and windows and remain calm. The government issued the advisory through its emergency broadcast system, instructing television and radio stations to relay the announcement at suitable intervals so that those in the vicinity could take precautions.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The announcement did not specify the type or size of the vessel involved, the number of people on board, or whether the fire had been contained. No injuries have been reported in the government's initial statement.
Further updates are expected from the Fire Services Department.
