Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI: First All-Electric GTI Makes World Premiere at the Nürburgring

Date:

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the first-ever all-electric model to wear the legendary GTI badge. The new ID. Polo GTI made its world premiere Friday at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, exactly 50 years after the debut of the original Golf GTI that started it all.

Powered by a 166 kW (226 PS) electric motor driving the front wheels, the ID. Polo GTI delivers 290 Newton-meters of instant torque and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. Volkswagen has equipped the model with an electronically controlled front differential lock as standard, ensuring power is distributed efficiently to maximize traction through corners.

"The GTI for a new era," Volkswagen calls it — and the badge has never been more significant. The original Golf GTI from 1976 created the hot hatch segment, and now Volkswagen is reinterpreting the formula for the electric age. The front-wheel-drive layout remains a core philosophy, staying true to the original GTI DNA while embracing fully electric propulsion.

The ID. Polo GTI rides on Volkswagen's MEB+ platform and is powered by a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack. The APP290 drive system delivers consistent performance, and the battery supports DC fast charging with a particularly constant charging curve, making long-distance travel more practical for owners.

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI continues the iconic GTI design language with clear, balanced proportions. The silhouette features Volkswagen's most recognizable design element — the C-pillar inspired by the first Golf — while GTI-specific styling cues set it apart from the standard ID. Polo. The exterior design is timeless and purposeful, staying true to the philosophy that made the original GTI an instant classic.

Inside, red and black dominate the cabin, with contrasting red topstitching on the new GTI sports steering wheel and red markings on the digital instruments. The cockpit features a 26 cm (10.2-inch) Digital Cockpit and an infotainment display arranged on a single visual axis. Thanks to the compact electric drive modules, the ID. Polo GTI offers 19 mm more interior space than its combustion-engine predecessor.

A new GTI driving profile, activated by a button on the sports steering wheel, adjusts all drive and chassis systems simultaneously — including power delivery, progressive steering, and adaptive damping — for a more dynamic driving experience. The ID. Polo GTI also comes with a next-generation Travel Assist system that includes traffic light recognition as standard.

Optional equipment includes a 425-watt Harman Kardon premium sound system with 10 speakers, a center speaker, and a subwoofer for an immersive audio experience.

Volkswagen plans to begin pre-sales in Germany this autumn, with pricing starting at just under 39,000 euros. The ID. Polo GTI represents a pivotal moment in automotive history — the democratization of electric performance, carrying the torch of a badge that has defined affordable driving excitement for half a century.

With the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen has proven that electrification does not mean the end of the hot hatch. Rather, it opens a new chapter — one where instant torque, zero emissions, and the unmistakable spirit of GTI come together in a package that honors the past while charging toward the future.
