Volkswagen Reveals All-Electric ID. Polo GTI: 226 HP Hatchback Revives Legendary Badge for EV Era

Date:

Fifty years after the original Golf GTI changed the automotive world, Volkswagen has unveiled the first all-electric model to carry its most iconic performance badge. The ID. Polo GTI — revealed Friday at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring — brings 226 horsepower, front-wheel drive, and an unmistakable GTI character to the compact electric segment.

Developed on Volkswagen's MEB+ platform, the ID. Polo GTI produces 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, all routed through the front wheels — just like the original 1976 Golf GTI. The electric powertrain delivers the torque instantly, propelling the hatchback from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.8 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 175 km/h (109 mph). An electronically controlled front differential lock comes as standard to put the power down effectively.

"The GTI for a new era," Volkswagen describes it. The ID. Polo GTI is not merely an electric conversion of the existing Polo; it is an entirely new development that honors the spiritual DNA of the GTI lineage while embracing full electrification.

Battery and Charging

Powering the front-mounted APP290 drive unit is a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack with a net capacity of 52 kWh. Volkswagen claims a provisional WLTP range of up to 424 kilometers (263 miles). DC fast charging supports up to 105 kW, and thanks to a particularly flat charging curve, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes at a suitable charging station.

GTI Design Cues, Inside and Out

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI leaves no doubt about its pedigree. The iconic red stripe stretches across the front grille, interrupted only by a 3D GTI emblem on the left. Below sits the classic GTI honeycomb pattern air intake, flanked by red-painted vertical elements inspired by motorsport towing eyes. Standard 19-inch alloy wheels fill the arches, while the rear features a distinctive split roof spoiler and illuminated red accents in the taillight clusters.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by red and black. GTI's signature tartan-check fabric returns on the premium sport seats, complemented by red contrast stitching throughout. A red marking at the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel rim mirrors motorsport tradition. The digital cockpit measures 10.25 inches, while the central infotainment display spans 12.9 inches. A clever retro display mode transforms the instruments into the style of a late Golf I — complete with a cassette-tape visualization for the music player.

Driving Dynamics and Practicality

A new GTI driving profile — activated by a dedicated button on the sports steering wheel — sharpens the electric motor's power delivery, the standard progressive steering, and the adaptive DCC sports suspension simultaneously. The cockpit graphics and colors switch to a sportier theme at the touch of the button.

Despite its compact footprint (4,096 mm long), the ID. Polo GTI is remarkably practical. The luggage compartment offers 441 liters — a 25 percent improvement over the previous combustion-engined Polo GTI — expanding to 1,240 liters with the rear seats folded. A detachable tow bar supports up to 1.2 tonnes, enabling the small Volkswagen to tow a motorcycle trailer or carry e-bikes.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn, with a starting price of just under 39,000 euros. The model represents Volkswagen's most direct statement yet that the GTI spirit can thrive in an electrified future — staying true to its front-wheel-drive, hot-hatch roots while embracing zero-emission mobility.

The ID. Polo GTI is classified as a near-production concept vehicle. Final production specifications may vary.
