Volkswagen Unveils All-Electric ID. Polo GTI: 226 HP Hot Hatch with 424 km Range

Date:

A New Icon for the Electric Age

Volkswagen has unveiled the first all-electric model to carry the legendary GTI badge — the ID. Polo GTI. Making its world premiere at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, the new electric hot hatch marks a historic moment as GTI celebrates its 50th anniversary.

With an output of 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of instant torque, the ID. Polo GTI dashes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. True to GTI heritage, power is delivered to the front wheels — just as it was on the original Golf GTI in 1976 — with an electronically controlled front differential lock fitted as standard to manage the power delivery with precision.

GTI DNA, Fully Electric

"The GTI for a new era," as Volkswagen describes it, is built on the MEB+ platform and represents a complete reimagining of the compact sports car for the electric age. The standard equipment includes adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering specially tuned for the GTI, ensuring that the driving dynamics live up to the iconic three-letter badge.

A new GTI driving profile, activated via a button on the sports steering wheel, sharpens every aspect of the car's behaviour — from power delivery to chassis response — while the digital cockpit switches to a dedicated GTI colour and graphics theme. A particularly charming touch is the optional retro display mode, which transforms the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit into the style of a late Golf I instruments layout.

Range and Charging

Power comes from a 52 kWh (net) nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, delivering a WLTP range of up to 424 kilometres. DC fast charging at up to 105 kW enables a 10 to 80 percent top-up in approximately 24 minutes, thanks to a notably constant charging curve. The ID. Polo GTI also supports Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing the car to power external devices directly from the high-voltage battery.

Design Inside and Out

The exterior follows Volkswagen's new "Pure Positive" design language, with a powerful stance on standard 19-inch alloy wheels. The iconic C-pillar, inspired by the original Golf, identifies it unmistakably as a Volkswagen. The GTI's signature red stripe appears across the front, while a distinctive divided roof spoiler sets the GTI apart from its stablemates. LED Plus headlights and LED tail lights are standard.

Inside, red and black dominate the cabin. A narrow red stripe spans the full width of the dashboard, red contrast stitching appears on the GTI sports steering wheel, seats, and door panels, and a red marker at the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel nods to motorsport tradition.

Practicality Meets Performance

Despite its performance credentials, the ID. Polo GTI is remarkably practical. Thanks to the compact electric drivetrain, passengers benefit from 19 mm more interior space than the previous combustion-powered Polo GTI. The luggage compartment has grown by more than 25 percent to 441 litres, expanding to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded.

Optional equipment includes a 425-watt Harman Kardon premium sound system, a panoramic sunroof, pneumatic massage function for the electrically adjustable front seats, and 19-inch forged alloy wheels.

Cutting-Edge Assistance

The ID. Polo GTI comes with Volkswagen's latest Connected Travel Assist, which now includes automatic traffic light recognition, enabling the car to bring itself to a stop when the lights turn red. One-pedal driving capability is also featured, where the car recuperates energy all the way to a standstill.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn at a starting price of under 39,000 euros. It marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter — not just for the Polo nameplate, which has sold over 20 million units globally, but for the GTI legend itself as it enters its electrified future.
