Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID. Polo GTI, marking the first time the legendary GTI badge has been applied to a fully electric model. The world premiere took place at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, celebrating 50 years since the debut of the original Golf GTI in 1976.
The ID. Polo GTI delivers 166 kW (226 PS) to the front wheels via Volkswagen's MEB+ electric platform, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. A maximum torque of 290 Newton-metres is available instantly, managed through an electronically controlled front differential lock fitted as standard. The top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h.
Like its legendary 1976 predecessor, the ID. Polo GTI sends its power through the front axle, preserving the traditional GTI driving character while embracing full electrification. The vehicle rides on a 52 kWh (net) battery pack, supporting DC fast charging at up to 105 kW. Volkswagen estimates a provisional WLTP range of up to 424 kilometres, with combined energy consumption projected at 16.4 to 14.4 kWh per 100 kilometres.
One of the standout features of the ID. Polo GTI is the dedicated GTI driving profile, activated via a dedicated button on the sports steering wheel. This profile instantly sharpens every aspect of the vehicle's behaviour — electric motor power delivery, progressive steering response, and the adaptive DCC sports chassis — switching all systems to their most dynamic settings. The cockpit display simultaneously switches to a distinctive GTI-themed colour and graphic scheme.
The ID. Polo GTI measures 4,096 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,513 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,599 mm. Minimum kerb weight starts from approximately 1,540 kg (with the 52 kWh battery). Volkswagen describes the vehicle as both a powerful compact sports car and a vehicle fully suitable for everyday driving needs.
Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn, with a starting price of just under 39,000 euros. The new model represents the first all-electric member of Volkswagen's iconic GTI family, which has become one of the most recognisable performance car lineages in automotive history over the past five decades.
The launch of the ID. Polo GTI follows closely on the heels of the standard ID. Polo, which was unveiled in late April 2026 with a starting price of 24,995 euros and a WLTP range of up to 454 kilometres. Together, the two models form an entirely reimagined, all-electric Polo lineup developed in Wolfsburg, combining the brand's compact car heritage with its accelerated electric mobility strategy.
Volkswagen's GTI anniversary celebrations at the Nürburgring also included the unveiling of the Golf GTI EDITION 50, a 239 kW (325 PS) anniversary special that set a new front-wheel drive production lap record of 7:44.523 minutes on the Nordschleife.
With the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen is signalling that electrification and performance heritage can coexist — bringing the spirit of the original hot hatch into the electric age while maintaining the accessible, driver-focused philosophy that made the GTI a global cultural icon.
