ATVN — In a landmark moment for automotive enthusiasts and electric vehicle advocates alike, Volkswagen has officially unveiled the world's first all-electric GTI. The ID. Polo GTI made its global debut at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, marking 50 years since the legendary Golf GTI first captured the hearts of driving purists worldwide.
The ID. Polo GTI represents a bold step forward for Volkswagen, combining the iconic GTI DNA with cutting-edge electric propulsion. Developing 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Newton-metres of instantaneous torque, the compact electric sports car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds — yet remains thoroughly practical for everyday driving.
Like the original 1976 Golf GTI, power is channeled through the front wheels, with an electronically controlled front differential lock fitted as standard to ensure the torque is delivered with maximum precision. The model also features adaptive DCC sports suspension and progressive steering specially developed for the GTI, promising that signature go-kart-like handling that has defined the badge for half a century.
Volkswagen has equipped the ID. Polo GTI with a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, delivering a WLTP range of up to 424 kilometers. DC fast charging at up to 105 kW means the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes, thanks to a particularly constant charging curve.
The design language of the ID. Polo GTI stays true to GTI tradition. The iconic red stripe stretches across the front fascia, incorporating a 3D GTI logo on the left side. IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and an illuminated VW badge sit above, while a honeycomb-patterned air intake and red motor-sport-inspired accents complete the aggressive but clean front end. The signature C-pillar, inspired by the original Golf, remains unmistakably Volkswagen.
Inside, the cabin is a celebration of GTI heritage. Red and black dominate the cockpit, with contrasting red stitching on the GTI sports steering wheel and a red 12-o'clock marking reminiscent of racing cars. The seats reinterpret the legendary tartan check pattern of historic GTI models. A clever retro display mode transforms the digital instruments into the style of a late Golf I, complete with a cassette-tape graphic for the music player — a delightful nod to the 1980s.
Despite its compact dimensions, the ID. Polo GTI offers surprising practicality. Interior space has increased by 19 mm over its combustion-engined predecessor, while luggage capacity has grown by more than 25 percent to 441 liters (1,240 liters with seats folded). A detachable tow bar allows for a braked towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes.
On the technology front, the ID. Polo GTI features the next-generation Connected Travel Assist, which now includes automatic traffic light recognition and can bring the car to a stop within system limits. One-pedal driving, vehicle-to-load functionality, and a 12.9-inch infotainment display complete the tech package.
Volkswagen has confirmed that pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI will begin in Germany this autumn, with a starting price of just under €39,000. The model is expected to roll out across European markets shortly thereafter, marking a new chapter not just for the Polo nameplate — sold over 20 million times worldwide — but for the entire GTI legacy.
With the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen proves that the spirit of the GTI can thrive in an electric age. It is a fitting tribute to 50 years of driving pleasure and a compelling vision of what the next five decades may hold.
