Actor and comedian Hank Azaria has sparked a lively debate over celebrity seating at Madison Square Garden after publicly complaining about Taylor Swift occupying prime courtside seats during the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
Speaking about the experience, the 62-year-old Emmy winner did not hold back, admitting he is tired of seeing the pop superstar dominating the best seats in the house. "I know she is the hugest thing in the world, but we had to sit with her all through the NFL [to watch fiance Travis Kelce] and now she is at the Garden. Come on," Azaria said.
The actor claimed that Swift took up four courtside seats for herself, a security guard, and her friends Este Haim and Alana Haim of the band Haim. According to Azaria, this meant that other notable figures including DJ Questlove, "The Office" alum Rainn Wilson, actor Ed Burns, model Christy Turlington, "Succession" star Jeremy Strong, and Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge were all relegated to less desirable seating.
"You do not know from the Garden if you are going to get in until that day," Azaria explained, noting that the demand for Knicks playoff tickets is so intense that even A-listers cannot always secure premium seating. He noted that Ben Stiller, Tracy Morgan, and Spike Lee appear to be exceptions to the rule, suggesting that Lee may actually pay for his iconic courtside spot.
Azaria revealed that after failing to make the cut for Game 3, he purchased outrageously expensive tickets for Game 4, only to later discover he had been offered complimentary seats. He ultimately gave the pricey tickets to two friends as an extravagant gift. However, upon seeing his suite, he admitted he immediately regretted the decision. "I could not switch with them," he said with resignation.
Despite the seating drama, Azaria was able to witness what he described as the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history, with the Knicks defeating the Spurs 107-106. "When they were making this strange, gradual, limpy comeback all through the second half of the game, I was too nervous to commit to the reality that it might be happening to yell out loud about it," he recalled. "I just stood there with my hands on my head with my mouth agape not wanting to breathe too much."
The Knicks remarkable postseason run has turned Madison Square Garden into the hottest ticket in town, attracting a constellation of celebrities beyond Swift and Azaria. Mariska Hargitay, Adam Sandler, Timothee Chalamet, and Kylie Jenner were also spotted courtside, underscoring how the NBA Finals have become as much a cultural and entertainment event as a sporting one.
Swift, of course, is no stranger to the intersection of sports and entertainment.
