Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Breaks Cover as First Electric GTI in 50-Year History

Date:

Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new ID. Polo GTI, marking a historic milestone as the first all-electric model to bear the legendary GTI badge in the nameplate's 50-year history. The world premiere took place Friday at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, setting the stage for a new chapter in Volkswagen performance motoring.

The ID. Polo GTI delivers 166 kW (226 PS) from its APP290 electric drive system, propelling the compact sports car from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Maximum torque of 290 Nm is sent to the front wheels via an electronically controlled front differential lock, staying true to the original GTI formula that debuted with the first Golf GTI in 1976.

Power comes from a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery with 52 kWh of usable energy, providing a WLTP range of up to 424 kilometers. DC fast charging at up to 105 kW enables a 10-to-80 percent top-up in approximately 24 minutes, thanks to a particularly constant charging curve.

"The GTI for a new era: 50 years after the debut of the first GTI, Volkswagen is now presenting the first all-electric model with the world-famous badge," the company said in its official announcement from the Nürburgring.

Chassis specifications read like a purist's wish list. The ID. Polo GTI comes standard with adaptive DCC sports suspension, progressive steering calibrated specifically for GTI duty, and a new GTI driving profile activated by a button on the sports steering wheel. This profile switches all drive and chassis systems to maximum sportiness while transforming the digital cockpit to a dedicated GTI color and graphics scheme.

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI honors its heritage while embracing a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The iconic red stripe stretches across the front fascia, incorporating a 3D GTI logo on the left side. An illuminated VW badge sits above along with standard IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. The signature GTI honeycomb pattern adorns the lower air intake, and 19-inch alloy wheels fill the wheel arches as standard equipment.

Inside, the GTI treatment includes red and black color dominance, a sports steering wheel with a red 12 o'clock marking, premium sport seats featuring a reinterpretation of the legendary tartan check pattern, and red contrasting stitching throughout the cabin. The digital instrument cluster measures 10.25 inches, while the central infotainment display spans 12.9 inches. A novel "retro display" mode transforms the instruments into the style of a late Golf I, complete with era-appropriate graphic details.

Practicality has not been sacrificed for performance. The ID. Polo GTI offers 19 mm more interior space than its combustion-powered predecessor, while luggage capacity grows by over 25 percent to 441 liters (1,240 liters with seats folded). A towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes adds further versatility.

Standard equipment includes IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, LED tail light clusters with three-dimensional elements, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems. Optional Connected Travel Assist can now detect red traffic lights and automatically bring the vehicle to a stop. One-pedal driving capability is another new feature enabled by the MEB+ platform architecture.

Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn at a price starting just under 39,000 euros. The model represents Volkswagen's commitment to democratizing electric performance while preserving the GTI DNA that has captivated driving enthusiasts for half a century.
