Jason Momoa has exited Helldivers, the upcoming video game adaptation from PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures, Variety reported on June 8.
No official reason was given for the Aquaman stars departure from the project, which is directed by Justin Lin of Fast and Furious fame. Sony is now actively searching for a replacement lead and additional cast members.
The film is based on the popular shooter-style video game franchise from Arrowhead Game Studios. The property follows an elite unit of soldiers known as Helldivers who battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.
The sci-fi action film remains scheduled for a November 10, 2027 release, though further plot details have yet to be revealed. Momas casting was first announced in February 2026.
The project is produced by Hutch Parker alongside PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash and Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment.
Sony and PlayStation have had considerable success with their video game-to-film collaborations. The 2022 adaptation Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg grossed $407 million worldwide. Their partnership also produced the acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us and Peacocks Twisted Metal series.
The Helldivers game franchise launched in 2015 with a sequel, Helldivers 2, released in 2024 to strong player engagement, suggesting potential for follow-up films.
Despite this setback, Momoa maintains a packed slate of upcoming projects including A Minecraft Movie: Squared, live action-animation hybrid Animal Friends, Fast Forever, and Protecting Jared. This year alone, he will appear in Paramount and Legendarys Street Fighter as Blanka, Dune: Part 3 as Duncan Idaho, and Supergirl as intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo.
