BMW M Hybrid V8 Makes History with First-Ever Le Mans Hypercar Pole Position

Date:

BMW M Motorsport has achieved a historic milestone at the 93rd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with driver Dries Vanthoor securing the first-ever pole position for BMW in the legendary endurance race's Hypercar class.

Vanthoor put the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 on the top spot during the Hyperpole session, the high-stakes qualifying shootout that determines the final grid for the world's most famous endurance race. The achievement marks a watershed moment for BMW's top-tier motorsport programme, coming in the manufacturer's return to the Hypercar category after years of development with the M Hybrid V8 prototype.

The Belgian driver's flying lap edged out fierce competition from a deep Hypercar field that includes Toyota Gazoo Racing, Porsche Penske Motorsport, Ferrari AF Corse, Peugeot TotalEnergies, Cadillac Racing, Alpine, and Lamborghini Iron Lynx — making the accomplishment all the more significant.

Remarkably, all four BMW M Motorsport entries qualified inside the top six of their respective classes across both the Hypercar and LMGT3 categories, demonstrating the breadth and depth of the German manufacturer's Le Mans campaign. In the LMGT3 class, the BMW M4 GT3 entries also delivered strong performances in qualifying, securing competitive grid positions for the 24-hour contest.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans, held annually at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France, is the centrepiece of the FIA World Endurance Championship season. This year's race, running from 11 to 14 June 2026, features one of the strongest Hypercar grids in the event's history, with nine major manufacturers battling for overall victory.

For BMW, the pole position represents the culmination of a carefully orchestrated motorsport strategy that began with the development of the BMW M Hybrid V8 — a prototype racer powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine combined with a hybrid-electric system developed in partnership with BMW M Motorsport. The car made its race debut in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship before expanding into the FIA World Endurance Championship programme.

The #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 is crewed by a driver lineup that includes Dries Vanthoor, Raffaele Marciello, and Marco Wittmann — a combination of BMW works drivers with extensive GT and prototype racing experience. The sister #20 car fields Robin Shrijver, Sheldon van der Linde, and Rene Rast, forming a formidable two-car Hypercar assault.

Starting from pole position gives BMW a significant strategic advantage for the 24-hour classic, particularly in the critical opening hours where track position and clean air can determine the race's early rhythm. However, the Circuit de la Sarthe's unique characteristics — including its ultra-long Mulsanne Straight — mean that raw pace must be matched by impeccable reliability, fuel strategy, and tyre management across the full day-night-day cycle.

BMW's last overall victory at Le Mans came in 1999 with the BMW V12 LMR. The manufacturer has been steadily building toward a return to the top step of the podium, and Saturday's pole position signals that the M Hybrid V8 programme has the outright speed to challenge for victory against some of the most accomplished endurance racing teams in the world.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is scheduled to start on Saturday afternoon local time, with the field expected to take the tricolour at 16:00 CET.
