Four International Sports Events Granted M Mark Status in Hong Kong

Date:

Hong Kong's Major Sports Events Committee has granted M Mark status to four international sporting competitions scheduled for June and July, including the first Fencing World Championships to be held in the city.

The committee announced on June 15 that the designation has been awarded to the FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2026 (June 17-21), the Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races (June 27-28), the Volleyball Nations League Hong Kong 2026 (July 8-12), and the Kerry Fencing World Championships 2026 Hong Kong, China (July 22-30).

The M Mark system is designed to support local sports associations and organisers in hosting major international events. Designated events receive official recognition and, in some cases, funding support to help them develop into recurring fixtures on the city's sporting calendar.

Committee Chairman Wilfred Ng said the four events offer a diverse lineup covering multiple sports. The chess championships will feature rapid and blitz formats, which are faster-paced than traditional tournament play. The dragon boat races continue a long-standing annual tradition that draws teams from multiple countries to Hong Kong. The Volleyball Nations League will bring top women's national teams to the Kai Tak Arena, and the fencing world championships will mark the first time the competition has been staged in Hong Kong.

The fencing championships are expected to draw athletes from dozens of countries. Hong Kong has expanded its presence in international fencing in recent years, hosting regional and world cup events that have helped build the sport's local profile.

Hong Kong has positioned itself as a destination for international sports events, with several high-profile competitions now staged annually. The city's existing portfolio includes the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, the Hong Kong Marathon, and various tennis and golf tournaments. The M Mark programme, introduced to attract and sustain major events, has been a factor in bringing these competitions to the city.

The dragon boat races, scheduled for late June, are among Hong Kong's best-known annual events. The races trace their origins to a traditional Chinese festival and have grown into an international competition drawing participants from across Asia and beyond. The chess championships add a new discipline to the city's event calendar.

The Volleyball Nations League stop in Hong Kong returns for another edition at the Kai Tak Arena, continuing the city's role as a host venue for the global women's volleyball tour. Previous editions have drawn significant crowds and international broadcast coverage.

Further details on the events, including schedules and ticket information, are available through the M Mark programme website.
