**US Drone Strike Eliminates Venezuela Gang Leader in Cross-Border Operation**

A US military operation inside Venezuelan territory has resulted in the death of the leader of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, marking a significant escalation in Washington's efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations.

President Donald Trump was quoted by Truth Social as saying that following his direction, US Southern Command conducted a "swift and lethal kinetic strike" that "successfully executed" Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, known as Niño Guerrero. The operation represents one of the most direct US military actions on Venezuelan soil in recent years.

Venezuelan authorities confirmed their participation in what they described as a "joint operation" targeting organized crime in Bolívar state, signaling continued cooperation between the two nations on security matters despite historical tensions.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth was quoted by X as stating the strike targeted a Tren de Aragua compound within Venezuela. The victim was the longtime leader of one of Latin America's most dangerous criminal groups, which the Trump administration previously designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

Under Guerrero's leadership, Tren de Aragua evolved from a prison gang into a transnational criminal enterprise operating across Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile. The group expanded from extorting migrants to engaging in sex trafficking, contract killing, and kidnapping operations.

The operation fits within a broader US campaign that has reportedly killed more than 200 individuals since September in strikes on vessels suspected of drug smuggling. However, the military has faced criticism for failing to provide evidence that targeted boats were actually carrying narcotics or smugglers, raising questions about the legality and effectiveness of such operations.

The Tren de Aragua gang maintains connections to other criminal organizations throughout Latin America. In Ecuador, intelligence suggests partnerships with factions linked to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, while in Colombia, potential collaborations with left-wing guerrilla groups have been alleged.

Legal experts have questioned whether US strikes on suspected smuggling vessels violate international law by targeting individuals without due process. The Trump administration has maintained that the operations are lawful, arguing that crews of drug-running boats constitute legitimate combatants in what it characterizes as an armed conflict with drug cartels.

The killing comes on the heels of Trump's birthday celebrations and amid growing scrutiny of US military operations in Latin America. The administration's approach toward Venezuela has shifted significantly since early 2026, when US forces conducted a dramatic raid on then-President Nicolás Maduro's compound.
