Google Upgrades NotebookLM with Agentic Research Capabilities and New Output Formats

Google has announced a major update to NotebookLM, its AI-powered research and note-taking assistant, introducing new agentic capabilities, advanced reasoning features, and a significantly expanded range of output formats. The updates, detailed in a June 8 announcement on the official Google Blog, aim to transform NotebookLM from a source-grounded Q&A tool into a comprehensive research companion capable of tackling complex, multi-step projects.

The most immediately visible change is the dramatic expansion of output formats available within NotebookLM's studio panel. Users can now generate PDF reports complete with charts and tables, detailed budget spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel format, bespoke student worksheets, and even full PowerPoint presentations. The update also adds support for data visualizations in PNG and SVG formats, documents in PDF, DOCX, Markdown, and plain text, images generated via integration with Nano Banana, and structured data exports in CSV and JSON. All outputs can be downloaded directly from the studio panel, and users retain the ability to make edits after generation.

Beyond format expansion, NotebookLM is becoming significantly more proactive and agentic in how it assists with research. Previously, the tool was most effective when users arrived with their own sources and a clear understanding of their project. The new update changes this fundamentally — users can now start with loose ideas and open-ended questions, and NotebookLM will guide them through building a source repository directly within the chat interface. The system can even leverage Google Search to discover relevant, high-quality sources from across the web and add them to the user's notebook, dramatically lowering the barrier to getting started on any research project.

Google emphasized that users remain in full control of which sources are added, ensuring that work stays grounded in trusted information with clear attribution throughout.

The update enables several powerful real-world workflows. For researchers, a data analyst working with conflicting data formats from multiple countries can ask NotebookLM to conduct web research for additional context, write code to perform accurate data analysis, and create charts with a PDF report — all within a single session. For technical professionals, a program manager deciphering complex integration specifications can instantly transform technical documentation into a polished simplified guide, a slide deck, and a step-by-step roadmap for their team. Small business owners can also benefit — a gym owner running a media campaign can analyze raw sales data against ad spend, calculate financial impact, and make data-driven decisions about expansion.

These updates are rolling out globally on the web starting immediately to all users with Google AI Ultra subscriptions and all Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google has indicated plans to expand availability to additional users over time.

With these upgrades, NotebookLM positions itself as a serious contender in the AI research assistant space, combining the grounded, source-attributed approach that made it popular with new agentic capabilities that reduce friction and expand what's possible within a single research session.
