MIPP to Decide Political Direction After PN Supreme Council Meeting, Eyes Seven Seats in Johor and Negeri Sembilan

Date:

The Malaysian Indian Progressive Party (MIPP) will make a final decision on its political direction after the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Supreme Council meets, as the party positions itself for the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

MIPP secretary-general N Sathes Kumar confirmed that the party's central committee, which met over the weekend in Negeri Sembilan, discussed the national political landscape and various forms of engagement with several political parties in recent weeks. The committee has given president P Punithan a full mandate to continue discussions and engagements deemed appropriate in the interests of the party and the Indian community.

Sathes also revealed that MIPP has identified a number of seats it intends to contest in Johor and Negeri Sembilan in the upcoming state elections. The party's election machinery in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka has been fully mobilised and is running grassroots outreach programmes.

The development comes amid significant political realignments. MIPP said it had held engagements with several political parties in recent weeks, without naming all details of those discussions, as the party reassesses its position following turmoil in PN after the Islamist party PAS ended its political ties with Bersatu.

MIPP became PN's first Indian-based component party in April 2024, with Punithan appointed as a PN deputy chairman. The party currently holds no parliamentary or state assembly seats but is positioning itself to make an electoral breakthrough in the southern states.

Sathes said MIPP believed that political stability, national unity, and economic development must remain the priority of all parties. "The party will continue to play a constructive role in advancing the interests of the Indian community and Malaysians in general," he said.

Indian voters could be a factor in selected mixed constituencies in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, making MIPP's next move politically relevant as the election campaign intensifies.

Meanwhile, the election commission has set key dates for both states. Johor will vote on July 11, with nomination on June 27 and early voting on July 7. Negeri Sembilan will vote on August 1, with nomination on July 18 and early voting on July 28.
