Parti Wawasan Negara Emerges as New PN Variable After PAS-Bersatu Split

Date:

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Wawasan Negara has emerged as a new factor in Perikatan Nasional's reshaping, after PAS signalled support for the party to join the opposition coalition following its split with Bersatu.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party was prepared to support Parti Wawasan Negara's entry into PN, describing the move as part of efforts to strengthen the coalition. However, he said the matter would still need to go through the proper process, including discussion among PN component parties.

The development comes after PAS ended political cooperation with Bersatu on June 8, creating uncertainty over how the opposition bloc will position itself in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

Hadi said PAS had already parted ways with Bersatu at the party-to-party level, but Bersatu's formal position within PN was for Bersatu itself and the coalition process to determine.

His remarks suggest that PAS is trying to rebuild its opposition strategy without completely dismantling PN as a platform. Gerakan and other component parties are expected to play a role in determining how the coalition moves forward.

Parti Wawasan Negara is also set to become the political vehicle for Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and the RESET movement. Hamzah said the movement would operate through Parti Wawasan Negara and work with PAS, Gerakan and other parties that share similar objectives.

The move adds another layer to Malaysia's shifting opposition landscape. Hamzah, a former Bersatu leader and Larut MP, has been closely watched since tensions within Bersatu deepened following the PAS-Bersatu split.

For PN, the immediate challenge is whether it can present a coordinated front in Johor and Negeri Sembilan. Johor will vote on July 11, while Negeri Sembilan voters will go to the polls on August 1.

The entry of Parti Wawasan Negara could help PAS and its allies reorganise opposition support, but it may also raise new questions over seat negotiations, coalition branding and voter loyalty.

The opposition will need to avoid overlapping contests if it wants to maximise its chances against the PH-BN state governments. Any confusion over whether Bersatu, PAS or Parti Wawasan Negara candidates represent the main opposition line could weaken campaign messaging.

The coming weeks will show whether PN can absorb the new party arrangement smoothly or whether the PAS-Bersatu rupture will continue to divide the opposition vote.
