Terengganu MB Says Exco Line-Up Unchanged After PAS-Bersatu Split

Date:

Despite PAS's decision to sever political ties with Bersatu, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has confirmed that the state executive council line-up will remain unchanged.

Ahmad Samsuri was quoted by Utusan Malaysia as giving a brief response when asked about the position of Terengganu Bersatu chief Datuk Razali Idris, who currently serves as a state executive councillor.

Still the same. That is all, he said after a state executive council meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

The question of Razali's position arose after PAS announced it was cutting political cooperation with Bersatu, a move with significant implications for power-sharing arrangements in states governed by the PN coalition, including Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis.

Razali Idris, the Bersatu state chairman, holds a seat on the Terengganu executive council. In the 2023 Terengganu state election, Bersatu won five state seats: Hulu Besut, Permaisuri, Seberang Takir, Telemong and Kijal. These seats form part of the PN coalition's mandate to govern the state, which is led by PAS as the dominant party.

Ahmad Samsuri's decision to maintain the status quo appears to prioritise administrative stability even as the political relationship between PAS and Bersatu deteriorates at the federal level. PAS has indicated it will contest elections under its own logo in some states, while Bersatu has maintained it remains committed to the PN banner.

Political observers note that Terengganu, as a PAS stronghold, is likely to see minimal disruption at the state administration level, as PAS holds a comfortable majority in the state assembly even without Bersatu's five seats.
