The GTI Goes Electric: Volkswagen Unveils All-New ID. Polo GTI at the Nürburgring

In a historic moment for automotive enthusiasts worldwide, Volkswagen has unveiled the first all-electric model to wear the legendary GTI badge. The new ID. Polo GTI made its world premiere on Friday at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race, marking exactly 50 years since the original Golf GTI first captured the hearts of drivers in 1976.

Combining the iconic GTI DNA with Volkswagen's cutting-edge MEB+ electric platform, the ID. Polo GTI represents a bold new chapter for the hot hatch segment. With an output of 166 kW (226 PS) and 290 Nm of instant electric torque, the compact sports car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, while remaining thoroughly practical for everyday driving.

"The GTI for a new era," as Volkswagen describes it, stays true to its roots in one crucial way: like the original 1976 GTI, power is delivered to the front wheels. An electronically controlled front differential lock comes as standard, ensuring that the ample torque is translated into confident, precise handling rather than wheel spin.

The ID. Polo GTI rides on Volkswagen's advanced MEB+ architecture and features a 52 kWh (net) battery pack, delivering a provisional WLTP range of up to 424 kilometers. DC fast charging at up to 105 kW means the battery can be replenished quickly on longer journeys. Provisional energy consumption is rated at 16.4-14.4 kWh per 100 kilometers.

Dimensionally, the ID. Polo GTI measures 4,096 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,513 mm in height, with a generous wheelbase of 2,599 mm that maximizes interior space. Despite its compact footprint, it tips the scales at a respectable 1,540 kg (kerb weight without driver).

Visually, the ID. Polo GTI is unmistakably a GTI. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza Sport performance tires available as an option for drivers seeking maximum dynamic capability. The exterior styling incorporates classic GTI design cues reinterpreted for the electric era, while the interior combines sporty design with modern technology.

One of the standout technological features is the new Connected Travel Assist system, which utilizes online data for enhanced navigation assistance. For the first time, the system can detect red traffic lights within its operational limits and automatically bring the ID. Polo GTI to a stop. The vehicle also supports one-pedal driving, allowing for rapid deceleration through accelerator pedal control alone, making urban driving more effortless than ever.

Volkswagen chose the iconic 24 Hours of Nürburgring race as the backdrop for the world premiere, a fitting venue that connects the GTI's rich motorsport heritage with its electric future. To mark the occasion, the brand also celebrated 50 years of the GTI badge with a parade of historic GTI models on the Nordschleife circuit.

Pre-sales for the ID. Polo GTI are scheduled to begin in Germany this autumn, with a starting price of just under 39,000 euros. The model is expected to reach other European markets shortly thereafter. With this launch, Volkswagen is making a powerful statement: the spirit of the GTI is not just alive - it's fully electrified and ready for the next half-century.
